Pendleton residents want solar


A surge of residents interested in solarizing their homes has Pendleton calling for proposals.

After the successful solarization of Pendleton’s water treatment plan, interest in solar panels for homes has increased significantly among the city’s residents.

Now Pendleton is calling for proposals from firms to help introduce a city-run residential solar installation program.

After installing solar arrays on its water and sewer treatment plants, the city of Pendleton received dozens of phone calls and e-mails from residents asking how to put solar panels on their homes. And when the city sent out a survey late last year to discover how many homeowners would be interested in a city-run solar program, nearly 250 of the town’s 17,000 residents responded “yes.”

But the city had little solar installation experience aside from the treatment plant projects. That’s why it has issued a request for proposals from firms interested in not only installing residential solar systems in Pendleton, but also in educating residents and city staff on the best practices.
