Mayor Charlie Hales proposed eliminating the new $169 million urban renewal area around Portland State University.

The proposed changes would steer more money to urban renewal areas in the South Waterfront and across the Willamette River around OMSI.

“It’s a draft proposal that has come out of a number of conversations that we’ve had with the mayor’s office, said Kimberly Branam, deputy directory for the Portland Development Commission, the city’s economic development arm. “The mayor has been clear that he’s taking a close look at each of our urban renewal areas.”
