The I-5 bridge is actually two bridges, the northbound structure built in 1917 and the southbound one completed in 1958. The northbound bridge is classified as having a low service life. Its lift span has a cracked trunnion, an axle pulley that will cost as much as $12 million to fix. Some steel beams on both bridges are rusted and corroded. In 15 to 20 years, the green steel-truss bridges will need a $75 million paint job.
