Supporters of Oregon’s tech industry were surprised when Oregon State University announced its decision to replace Terri Fiez as the department head of OSU’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Supporters of Oregon’s tech industry were surprised when Oregon State University announced its decision to replace Terri Fiez as the department head of OSU’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Representatives from more than two dozen tech companies wrote to the university to complain that OSU had replaced a key industry partner without consultation or a clear rationale. Concern came from nearly all the biggest names in Oregon tech: Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM, Intel, IBM, Tektronix and Tripwire, among others.

Leaders in Oregon’s tech sector say Fiez, working with former engineering dean Ron Adams, developed a strong program with faculty who connected well with the industry, turning out talented graduates with readily employable skills.
