University of Oregon professor Richard Chartoff is helping to build a better condom.

The polymer scientist wants to make an ultra-thin polyurethane sheath that, when triggered by body heat, shrinks to fit like an extra layer of skin, he said.

Chartoff’s concept was one of 11 ideas that the Gates Foundation chose for a $100,000 apiece exploration grant. If Chartoff and his team at the Polymer Characterization and Thermal Analysis Laboratory at the university come up with a better condom, they stand to get another $1 million from the foundation to design a commercial process to bring it to market.
