The importance of STEM degrees was a central theme of the 11th annual Oregon Leadership Summit.

“We don’t have enough engineers being grown here today, so we have to recruit them from all over the state, all over the country, all over the world,” said Sam Blackman, CEO of Elemental Technologies. “Recruiting is the number one issue we face.”

Summit-goers pointed out that STEM jobs have grown three-times faster than non-STEM jobs in the past decade.

Gov. John Kitzhaber said he thinks more money for STEM education could be found by controlling costs in Oregon’s public safety and heath care systems.
