Eugene-based Oregon Research Institute brought more than $20 million in grant money into Lane County in 2012.

The nonprofit began in 1960, with a few scientists and staff members working out of a small office in Eugene. Since then, it has been consistently ranked as one of the top 50 nonprofit institutions receiving federal funds in the country, primarily from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Education.

Last year, 18 percent of ORI’s grant applications were funded, 2 percent above the national NIH average, and the percentage has held steady for 2013. “We’ve managed to maintain our hit rate,” science director Carol Metzler said, “but it’s a tough, competitive business.”
