Willamette Valley families increasingly depend on emergency food assistance

One of every five families in the mid-Willamette Valley depends on food from an emergency pantry at least once each year.

Combined requests for emergency food boxes in the mid-valley, the rest of Oregon and in southwest Washington have topped 1 million, the Oregon Food Bank reports.

Children make up almost 40 percent of those receiving emergency food assistance, [Linn Benton Food Share Director Mike Gibson] said.

The food share agency, with its warehouse in Tangent, expects more than 46,000 individuals and families to request food boxes this year, Gibson said. Many are seniors, the disabled, single parents, and the unemployed.
