Elementary school supply lists filled with brand name requests and items like reams of copy paper are frustrating parents.
The temptation to shift supply costs to parents has been especially strong since early in the recession, when school building budgets were diminished, principals said.
At every school, parents, teachers and other supporters make sure there are supplies for students who can’t afford them, principals said.
“If you’re out of work right now, you can’t pay 50-some dollars,” said Jim Keegan, principal at Mount Vernon where the fifth-grade supply list costs $49.83.
