Oregon ranks second among the 50 states for leadership in the cleantech industry, according to a new index.

The report from Portland-based Clean Edge Inc. ranked Oregon well behind California and barely ahead of Massachusetts.

According to Clean Edge, known for its research reports tracking green jobs and cleantech industry metrics, quantitative indicators were adjusted for state size in order to level the competitive landscape between smaller states, such as Oregon, and larger states.

Even with the adjustment, California lead the country by the data equivalent of a mile with a score of 91.6 out of 100— compared to Oregon’s 68.6 and Massachusetts’ 67.6. Washington and Colorado rounded out the top five with scores of 61.8 and 59.9, respectively.

Pernick said Oregon ranked No. 2 overall, No. 4 in technology and policy, and No. 3 in capital. While venture capital continues to be a challenge for Oregon, the state boasts a robust market for clean energy.
