PDX retail roundup: Ray's Ragtime reopens; Green Zebra set for Lloyd District

Portland's historic vintage shop relocates from downtown to the Hollywood district; Green Zebra Grocery expands to Lloyd District.

After soaring downtown rent prices pushed out Ray's Ragtime, the Portland staple opened in the Hollywood District just a month shy of its relocation.

The vintage store had operated on the same block at Southwest Tenth and Morrison in downtown Portland since 1986, but was forced to move as rent skyrocketed.

The shop opened over the weekend at 4059 NE Sandy Boulevard, directly across from the Hollywood Theatre.

"We love the neighborhood," said employee Tommie Trujillo. "Everybody's so sweet. It's great. This is a really old neighborhood and it really complements our store."

Green Zebra set up its second mini-grocery location in the redeveloping Lloyd District on Multnomah Street.

Green Zebra, which opened its first location in North Portland in 2013, offers the types of products you'd see at a traditional grocery store (fresh produce, a deli counter, etc.) in a roughly 8,000-square-foot space. It plans to open its third store on the PSU campus this fall.

...In a news release, Green Zebra chief executive Lisa Sedlar called the Lloyd District a "perfect place" for the store.

"The days of driving to the big store and parking in the big lot and doing the big shop are a thing of the past—it's time consuming and wasteful," she said.
