Fierce competition for the few Portland area construction jobs means local contractors can’t hire new staff, and construction employment has dropped 11%.

Portland contractors have seen a slight increase in public projects such as university and hospital renovations paid for with federal and state stimulus money, but very few private sector projects.

The Associated General Contractors of America last week reported 294 out of 337 metro areas in the U.S. lost construction jobs between May 2009 and May 2010.

In the Portland area, that one-year loss amounted to 5,300 jobs, an 11 percent drop that local contractors hope is leading to a turning point.
