Despite initial willingness of Coburg to back a 15-year property tax break, a proposed Materne applesauce factory still faces hurdles.

The key unanswered question: Who would pay for the infrastructure upgrades in Coburg that might be needed to meet the new plant’s substantial sewer and water needs?

City officials say they won’t know for sure whether the improvements would be needed until manufacturer Materne gives the city a new engineering plan for its factory, something that is expected in the coming weeks or months. But they say there’s a good chance that the plant’s needs could force major new spending on the city’s sewer system and, potentially, its water system, too.
