After a rough 2009, state agriculture department leaders from Oregon, California, Washington and Idaho discuss their 2010 outlook in an article in the Capital Press.

Oregon Department of Agriculture Director Katy Coba hopes that the recession has hit its bottom, as agriculture tends to go into recession slower than other sectors, but comes out of it more slowly as well.

New and innovative technology, alternate crops and growing more with less resources are in agriculture’s future, she said.

“I think we will see new things coming out of the industry because of the experiences of the past year,” she said. “When you look at every possible option to cut costs, you discover new ways of doing business.
