The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank celebrated its grand opening in Washington County this week.

Increasing the number of babies who drink mother’s milk is the primary mission of the milk bank, the first in the Pacific Northwest and the 12th in the U.S. Though its first day of business was Thursday, its staff has been screening donors since April and its founders have been working to open a milk bank for five years.

A nursing mother who produces extra milk can sign up as a potential donor. She must undergo a health and lifestyle screening. Winfield said 59 women have signed up, with 17 completing the screening so far.
