Portland tries to crack down on battery disposal


An estimated 660,000 pounds of dry-cell batteries were thrown away by Portland-area households in 2009, something the region is trying to cut down on.

An estimated 660,000 pounds of dry-cell batteries were thrown away by Portland-area households in 2009, something the region is trying to cut down on.

Last month the regional government started a new “Recycle More. Recycle Less” campaign encouraging people to buy rechargeable batteries.

And a new Portland rechargeable battery company has launched a pilot program at five Whole Foods in Oregon and Seattle as well as at Portland State University to sell batteries from a Swap Station kiosk it hopes will revolutionize how Americans use batteries.
