Hanford is biggest stimulus draw

The major decontamination work at the old nuclear reservation in Hanford, Wash., has made the site the single biggest recipient of federal stimulus contracts.

The site is getting an additional $2 billion to boost its efforts. As a result, the state ranks third in the nation for stimulus-related jobs.

The extra cash won’t seriously hasten the decades-long cleanup timetable. But it has had a measurable impact, shown both in the trail of demolished buildings at Hanford and in the oasis of economic prosperity in nearby Richland, Pasco and Kennewick.

“The president wanted quick jobs; we provided them,” says Jon Peschong, the Hanford stimulus program manager for the U.S. Department of Energy, which is overseeing the cleanup.
