A proposed Oregon bill would fund tuition and fees for OHSU students who practice in rural or underserved areas after graduation.

SB 2, which received a hearing Tuesday in the Senate Committee on Health Care and Human Services, would allocate nearly $5 million from the state’s two-year budget for OHSU to fund the program. The program, in turn, would cover the costs of up to 40 students at OHSU, studying medicine, dentistry, nursing or to be a physician’s assistant.

In return for the financial help, students will commit to work in a designated rural or underserved area in Oregon for a length of time equal to the years of tuition received plus one year.
