Tigard-based Paragon BioTeck secured federal approval for a chemical solution to dilate pupils.

The solution, used to dilate pupils, is already marketed by other companies, including Bausch & Lomb. However, Witham said he expects other companies to stop selling the solution as news of the drug approval spreads.

Paragon took advantage of a legal gray area with its new drug approval application. Several drugs already on the market are considered “unapproved” by the Food and Drug administration. But in 2006 the agency launched an initiative to encourage manufacturers of the unapproved drugs to seek approval, while blocking other unapproved manufacturers from doing so.
