Federal mediators plan talks between three Northwest grain terminal operators and the West Coast longshore union.

The renewed contract negotiations in Vancouver will be the first since December, when the three terminal operators declared an impasse and forced members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union to accept new management-friendly workplace rules. A fourth terminal owner, Temco, defected from the grain-handlers’ coalition and reached a contract deal with the union.

Union members have picketed United Grain’s Vancouver terminal since the company accused a worker of sabotaging equipment and locked them out. The union denies the allegations. The Vancouver Police Department is investigating.
