In a letter sent last Friday, Rear Adm. K.A. Taylor said the agency can’t start a public comment period until CRC managers assess the Interstate 5 replacement span’s effects on the Columbia River navigation channel.
Taylor, the Coast Guard’s district commander in Seattle, wants more information regarding economic impacts on river users. The agency needs details concerning mitigation for three manufacturers upriver whose giant products wouldn’t fit under the lower clearance of the bridge proposed between Portland and Vancouver.
The Coast Guard has veto authority over the project.
