The bad economy coupled with industry regulation changes have caused the number of cruise ship visits to Astoria planned for the next year to sink by over one half.

Only nine ships are scheduled to call on Astoria in 2010, and 2011 doesn’t look any better, according to Bruce Conner of Sundial Travel, a contract employee for the Port.

The Port’s cruise business peaked at 20 calls this year; there were 19 ship calls in 2008. The Port originally scheduled 18 ships for 2009, but that number rose during this spring’s swine flu scare, when the Port picked up an extra two ships that had been scheduled to tour the Mexican Riviera.
