Oregon Zoo officials insist that the Asian elephant recently born there will stay in Portland.

This calf was always intended to live at the Oregon Zoo,” said Kim Smith, zoo director, in an early morning news conference. “The only thing that’s happened today is a headline that went out. We are not wavering … from our vision.”

Smith was referring to a story published Monday night by the Seattle Times, describing a contract with Have Trunk Will Travel, a private California elephant ranch that, by contract, owns the calf. But Smith says despite the ownership, the calf the zoo always planned — and continues to plan – to keep the calf.
