Former Pixelworks executives hope their Portland startup TablesUp can help customers better navigate restaurants.

After downloading the app, consumers view a map with color-coded pins that represent wait times ranging from less than 10 minutes to more than 30. Users also can request a wait time for a restaurant and get a text message response.

“Half of the city’s restaurants don’t take reservations,” says the influential Portland restaurateur Kurt Huffman. “And the half that does always keeps seats for walk-ins. As a result, there’s a regular wait list at most restaurants.”
