Oregon is receiving $40 million in federal stimulus money for geothermal energy projects.
Oregon is expecting $40 million in federal funds for geothermal energy projects, over half of which is going to a company aiming to generate electricity from the water beneath the Newberry volcanic cone.
The money is being distributed by the U.S. Department of Energy to seven geothermal initiatives across the state, with more than half going to a company hoping to generate electricity from the super-heated water beneath the Newberry volcanic cone south of Bend.
Though geothermal wells are already used to heat some schools, homes and businesses in Oregon, the state does not have any utility-scale geothermal plants, which draw hot water and steam from the Earth to spin turbines, producing power.
