The value of corn grown for livestock feed and silage was nearly $109 million in 2011, moving field corn into the top 10 list of the state’s most valuable crops. The figure does not include sweet corn, which people eat. It’s a $33 million annual crop in its own right, but is counted as a separate commodity.
Agriculture officials say the high cost of livestock feed is driving the increase in field corn production. Instead of buying corn-based feed, dairy farms and feed lot operators are growing their own.
