The Portland region needs to attract and retain “traded sector” businesses, according to a report commissioned by the Value of Jobs Coalition.

Traded sector businesses produce goods and services used outside the region.

The classification includes most manufacturing, design services, advertising and technical consulting. Health care, education, food service, retail stores, construction and real estate are part of the local sector economy.

Both kinds of economic activity support each other, but traded sector workers tend to be better educated, work fewer hours and earn higher pay — an average of $15,300 more per year, or 42 percent annually, according to the report.
