Now that Oregon’s unemployment rate has lowered to 8.8%, more than 8,000 Oregonians will lose their unemployment benefits.

In Oregon, one can collect 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. The last 20 weeks are federally funded in what’s called an extension benefit, but that money is going away, because Oregon’s unemployment has continuously lowered and is now at 8.8%.

“Right now, the unemployment rate had dropped enough in Oregon to no longer have a high enough unemployment rate, compared to three years ago, to keep us on the Extended Benefits program,” says Craig Spivey, Public Affairs Specialist with the Oregon Employment Department.
