Greater Portland’s unemployment rate fell to 8.2% in January, below the nation’s jobless rate for the first time in three-and-a-half years.
The Oregon Employment Department also revised past estimates for the seven-county region, revealing a slightly better employment picture than previously thought. The new data “show that Portland has added back 35,900 of the 82,800 jobs lost during the Great Recession,” the department said in a press release Monday.
Since the recession, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Portland-Vancouver region has been less severe than the state’s, which in January was 8.5 percent. But the region only recently caught up with the nation’s jobless rate. In January, it finally fell below the 8.3 percent U.S. rate, which it hadn’t done since June 2008, state data show.
