Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden want to move up the timetable for getting U.S. troops out of Afghanistan.

“We simply cannot have more years of elevated troop levels in Afghanistan,” said a letter that the two Oregon Democrats sent to President Barack Obama this week along with 22 other senators.

Merkley and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., were the lead signers.

So far, the Afghanistan war has claimed the lives of 55 Oregon soldiers with 367 wounded in action, according to Merkley’s office.
