A $100,000 investment is at stake at the sixth annual Bend Venture Conference set for October 16. Three Central Oregon companies are among those competing for the funds.

The list of competing companies includes First Record Carbon LLC, a Bend company that helps businesses manage carbon offset credits; MyGroceryTools.com, a Bend company that tracks grocery prices online; and WaveTech Engines Inc., a Redmond company that’s patented an internal combustion engine that more efficiently converts fuel energy into motion, a design its inventor says can dramatically improve fuel efficiency.

Brad Raether, the founder of WaveTech Engines, said his 2-year-old company has already raised close to $1 million in startup capital and is seeking another $2 million to fund the final buildout of his prototype engine. The $100,000 or more he might win at the Bend Venture Conference is small in relative terms, but the event generally attracts angel investors and venture capital firms from around the West, giving small companies like Raether’s priceless exposure.
