The Port of Portland handled 13.4 million tons of cargo in 2011, its third-best year ever.

The Port said Tuesday that it saw a 9 percent increase during the year in shipping containers, like these shown at Marine Terminal 6. 

But the gains were offset by an 11.5 percent decline in auto shipments. Auto imports lagged after March’s devastating tsunami in Japan and months of flooding in Thailand, though the port started exporting Ford vehicles to South Korea in 2011 for the first time.
