A Portland-based startup called BikeTrak helps bicycle owners track down their stolen bikes using GPS.

 

The idea has drawn support from Portland’s cycling community, especially among shop owners and bicycle manufacturers who see it as an added guarantee for buyers. It also beat out two other startups at this month’s Seed Oregon PubTalk championship sponsored by the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network. The win gives her a chance to spotlight BikeTrak at the Angel Oregon investors conference in April. 

[Founder Kris] Akins recruited local entrepreneur Monty Goodson to help develop BikeTrak’s technology in October 2010. They plan to release the first edition this summer. 

The Supreme Court decided Monday to block law enforcement from using GPS technology to track people before getting a judge’s approval. But BikeTrak allows cyclists to tag their own bikes, then alert police if they go missing, Akins said.
