The Eugene Airport experienced a record year of passengers as more people decided to fly rather than drive to Portland.

 

While traffic to the Rose Bowl at the end of the year, and to and from the Bowl Championship Series at the start of it, certainly helped boost traffic, the airport would have set a record even without football, airport Director Tim Doll said.

Business and leisure travel have increased as the economy has started to improve, he said. And more people in the airport’s market area — which stretches from Salem to Roseburg, the Cascades to the coast — have started to fly out of Eugene instead of driving up to Portland, Doll said.

Fifty-eight percent of area travelers flew out of Eugene last year, compared with 52 percent two years ago, he said.
