Lane County homes and businesses have been using less electricity and water and throwing out less garbage since the start of the recession.

Garbage, in particular, is closely tied to the business cycle. “Because of the economy, people are buying less and throwing less away,” the county’s waste management manager, Patti Hansen, said.

The average tonnage deposited at the Short Mountain Landfill each month has fallen by 31 percent since it peaked in mid-2006 at 308,000 tons, according to the Lane County Waste Management Division.

The landfill should last an extra 20 years as a result of the waste stream shriveling in the recession, Hansen said.
