Innovative developer Bob Gerding was known for sustainable building in downtown Portland. He died of cancer Tuesday at age 71.

Gerding was most known for co-founding Gerding Edlen Development Co., the firm that redeveloped the former Blitz-Weinhard brewery into an urban cluster of offices and shops that are studied worldwide for their approach to mixed-use development and water and energy conservation.

Over a decade or so, the firm exploded into the largest developer in the state and the world’s biggest producer of buildings certified for the highest environmental standards.
