gearheartOregon Business is proud to launch the 100 Best Nonprofits to Work For in Oregon this year to recognize nonprofits as key businesses critical to the economic health of the state, and ones that employ hundreds of thousands of Oregonians.

Being a great place to work is just as important to nonprofit organizations as it is to for-profit companies. Workplace satisfaction helps retain the best employees, cuts turnover costs, boosts productivity and creativity, and gives organizations a competitive edge. In an economy where every dollar and every resource counts, it’s crucial for employers to know how to effectively manage their workforce.

The nonprofit project was based on our 17-year-old widely recognized 100 Best Companies project. More than 6,700 employees from over 200 nonprofits and not-for-profits organizations around the state participated, and there was no cost to enter the survey. Any organization registered with the state as a nonprofit or not-for profit group was eligible as long as it had a minimum of 10 paid (full- or part-time) Oregon employees. Employers ranging from faith-based groups to professional associations to charitable organizations participated in the survey.

The specially designed survey was launched in late April, in partnership with nonprofit support organization TACS, and was comprised of an anonymous 50-question employee survey and an independent assessment of the nonprofit employers’ workplace practices.

Research partner Davis, Hibbitts and Midghall and Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer used these surveys to create the 100 Best ranking.

It isn’t easy being a great workplace, but this year’s inaugural class of Best Nonprofits has set the standards for what it takes.

100 BEST METHODOLOGY

EMPLOYEE SURVEY

The survey is voluntary and free of charge. Participating nonprofits, not-for-profits and government agencies must employ at least 10 Oregon workers at the time of taking the survey. Organizations are categorized as small if they have 10-24 employees worldwide; medium if they employ 25-74; and large if they employ 75 or more. For the 2009 survey nearly 6,700 Oregon workers rated their satisfaction with 202 nonprofit organizations in 50 workplace qualities — 10 in each of the following categories:
1. Benefits and compensation: health coverage, fitness and wellness, retirement plan, compensation, employee retention.
2. Work environment: scheduling, diversity, family balance, teamwork, fun, technology, community support, policies and procedures.
3. Decision-making and trust: collaboration and cooperation, creativity, trust and openness, organizational pride, ethical standards.
4. Performance management: performance feedback and goals, employee and employer accountability, rewards and acknowledgement.
5. Career development and learning: opportunities, promotions, employee training, educational support, management diversity and communications.

EMPLOYER BENEFITS SURVEY

Organization representatives answered more than 50 questions covering a comprehensive set of benefits including health and wellness, time off, family-friendly policies, work scheduling, incentives, retirement plans and culture.

SCORING

The employee survey counts for 5/6 of a nonprofit’s score. For each organization, the average employee rating is calculated in each of the five categories on a scale of 0-100. The benefits survey is also scored on a 100-point scale, accounting for the remaining 1/6 of the overall score, resulting in a total possible score of 600.

HOW TO ENTER THE 100 BEST NONPROFITS:

1. Eligibility: Any not-for-profit government agency, association, hospital or health plan, credit union, or 501(c)-type organization with at least 10 Oregon-based employees is eligible to enter the survey. The organization may be headquartered outside the state.
2. Survey period: The process for 2010’s list will begin in April and end in June 2010. There is no charge to participate, and organizations that do not make the list will remain anonymous. All participants that complete the process can obtain survey results.
3. Submitting your nonprofit: Send an e-mail with the name, title, phone number and e-mail address of the person who will act as the 100 Best contact to: [email protected].
4. Mark your calendar: The survey sign-up link will also be posted to www.oregon100best.com in April.
