Critics battling gas tax

Opponents of Legislature-approved increases in gas taxes and vehicle fees have until Sept. 25 to collect 55,179 signatures to force a statewide vote.

If there are enough signatures, which must be verified within 30 days of the deadline, the election will coincide with the May 18 primary. If there are not enough, or no signatures are submitted, the increases will take effect as scheduled — although the state gasoline tax, now 24 cents per gallon, will go up 6 cents only after two consecutive quarters of economic growth but no later than Jan. 1, 2011.
