Oregon restaurants and markets that had grown accustomed to a supply of fresh, pasture-raised chickens and turkeys from Greener Pastures Poultry received sad news this spring when the independent poultry folks closed their doors. Aaron Silverman, a chicken farmer and spokesman for the group says that after two years of processing its own birds and not making money, it was time to call it quits. Greener Pastures worked to find a USDA-approved processing facility that could handle a larger volume of poultry and still live up to its standards, but to no avail. Silverman, who took a job with the Portland Farmers Market, says that while the group of two chicken farmers and two turkey farmers has suspended operations, they may resume if a processing facility is found in the future.
