Two Lane County water fitness gear companies have high hopes for expansion in the coming years after enduring a major hit during the recession.

HYDRO-FIT and AquaJogger essentially created the deep water aerobics industry in the mid-1980s by inventing the gear that makes it possible, said Mark Grevelding, spokesman for the Aquatic Exercise Association, a nonprofit trade group based in Florida.

The companies have combined annual sales of about $2.5 million worth of buoyancy belts, foam barbells, webbed gloves and flotation cuffs. Their market is about 10 million participants in water exercise classes nationally.

But the companies’ founders say that they anticipate that the aging of the baby boom generation will mean a boom in sales.
