Social Venture Partners Portland, a venture philanthropy group, is honing its focus on pre-kindergarten education.

Social Venture Partners, as a concept, originated more than a decade ago in Seattle by some retiring Microsoft executives who [executive director Mark] Holloway said “didn’t just want to write checks to nonprofits and hope they made a difference.”

So instead, they decided to operate like venture capital firms, bringing not only capital but also business acumen and a hands-on approach to chosen nonprofits.
