Even though Ted Wheeler has huge name recognition and ambition, it looks like running for mayor of Portland isn’t in the future.

Though it’s clear Ted Wheeler has ambitions for future statewide office, City Hall Watch wondered whether Wheeler might be interested in pursing the Portland mayor’s post, too. Mayor Sam Adams announced more than a week ago that he would not seek a second term, swinging open the doors to the possibility of more candidates in the field.

“I’ll be making an announcement about my political plans after Labor Day,” Wheeler wrote in an email last week.

That sounded like a “maybe.” So City Hall Watch asked Wheeler to clarify. “I wasn’t very clear,” Wheeler wrote back. “As treasurer, I have the opportunity to protect Oregon’s long-term financial health. I also get to take a leadership role in charting the state’s job creation efforts. Providing leadership to those efforts will continue to be my priority.”
