Portland-based Mercy Corps continues to grow, and with increased revenue comes increased administration spending. The humanitarian organization’s overhead has more than doubled in the past nine years.

Nonprofits struggle to minimize overhead in part to save precious funds for programs, but also to persuade donors they get value for their money. In 2001, Mercy Corps trumpeted its 5 percent overhead for fiscal 2000, contrasting it to Save the Children’s 16 percent figure.

Since then, Mercy Corps has continued rapid expansion, increasing from 1,200 workers worldwide to 3,700, according to its annual report released Tuesday. The agency operates in hotspots ranging from Somalia to Sri Lanka, providing emergency aid and boosting development.
