Team Oregon, a business recruiting group, traveled to Japan in early March to talk about solar cells, battery charging stations and electric cars.

Now, those plans have been set aside while Japan rebuilds.

Then came the 9.0 quake, the pulverizing tsunami and the desperate fight to quell fires, explosions and partial meltdowns at four of Japan’s nuclear power plants. The effect on Oregon’s economic prospects is unclear and, with tragedy so fresh, not an issue to press.

“We don’t have a good handle on what that means,” said Metro Council President Tom Hughes, who was part of the state delegation. “Everything we came back with — the perceptions, the leads — has got an asterisk behind it now.”
