Oregon loggers’ hopes are high even though the industry needs home construction to return to prerecession levels in order to recover.

The annual Oregon Logging Conference took place this week in Eugene, with a theme of “Powered Up and Ready.”

The industry is just barely climbing out of its three-year “depression,” home construction is showing “no signs” of improvement and it’s likely to be 2014 or 2015 before the industry rises to match its historic trend, he said.

“New home sales in the West were down 37 percent in January, so there’s still no signs whatsoever that we’re seeing a turnaround in the housing market,” [keynote speaker Lynn] Michaelis told about 500 loggers and other wood products employees in a speech at the Lane Events Center.
