The Portland Business Alliance released a trade study showing that the Portland area is a national leader in international trade.

The region’s strength in exports is a powerful asset as the dollar weakens and Asian economies lead global growth.

Workers at export-oriented companies earn more, they said, regardless of education levels. Oregon is good at trade, they said, ranking seventh in the nation in the share exports hold — 12 percent — of the state’s economy.

Imports boost employment as well, business leaders said, supporting longshore, warehouse, trucking and retail jobs. Pass international trade agreements such as one pending with South Korea, they said, and Oregon can begin to break its toxic cycle of declining incomes, tax revenues and public services.
