Oregon regulators endorsed Portland General Electric’s plan to close the Boardman coal-fired power plant by 2020.

The state’s only coal plant has faced environmental pressure for years.

The decision on the Boardman coal plant — Oregon’s largest source of haze-causing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions — now moves to the Environmental Quality Commission, which is expected to approve the Department of Environmental Quality recommendation next Thursday.

The electric power industry has warned for years that regulatory costs could shut down plants, William Kovacs, a senior vice president at the Chamber, wrote to DEQ during the comment period. “In the case of PGE Boardman, those days are now upon us.”
