Eugene’s City Council approved a plan to help residents cut back on carbon emissions and fossil fuel use.

The 53-page document is called “A Community Climate and Energy Action Plan for Eugene” and includes 78 ideas.

The proposals include developing pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods to get people out of their cars and onto bikes and buses; making buildings more energy efficient and encouraging the use of on-site renewable energy systems; promoting locally produced food, possibly by increasing the number of chickens and other animals allowed in urban backyards; and even encouraging residents to eat less red meat and dairy products, because of the high amounts of carbon dioxide emitted in the production of those types of foods.

With the council’s approval, city officials now have the task of figuring out which of the ideas to pursue and at what cost.
