The new Mount Hood Adult Day Center in Gresham provides a multitude of activities for clients, ranging from an on-site pedicurist to a “man-cave.”

“We cater to clients who want to stay in their homes or live with a spouse, mother or daughter,” says [Judith O’Connell]. “A lot of times they become exhausted. Typically the caregiver passes away before the one being taken care of.”

To help fulfill O’Connell’s vision of an interactive, engaging environment, Michael McDuffey serves as the facility’s creative director. With training in cognitive rehabilitation therapy, he helps clients explore interests and activities that may have fallen by the wayside over time and uncover paths not previously traversed.

“One of the things you look out for, specifically with people who suffer mild or medium dementia, are ways to access parts of the brain that are functioning – only intermittently, maybe – but have retained cognition long after the memory has faded,” he says.
