Soon, technology will allow farmers to separate high-quality wheat from low-quality as they harvest.
Wheat farmers use combines to separate wheat from chaff, and soon new technology will also separate high-quality product from low-quality.
The new combines will use an optical grain quality sensor that measures protein concentration.
Bryce Olson, grain marketer and grain broker with Pendleton Grain Growers, said the concept is feasible, and already in use in Australia.
Olson said the technology will be increasingly beneficial to farmers as technology catches up to marketing opportunities, especially in market areas where cooperative-type organizations aren’t available.
“There often is a premium for low-protein soft white wheat and there’s always a premium for high-protein red wheat,” he said.
